Telecommunications
Alexius International is in the business of fostering sustainable, high impact telecommunications development. As an innovator in the field, Alexius is pioneering telecommunication models for increasing internet access in order to add value to existing services and increase citizens' capacity for taking advantage of the educational, economic, and social benefits that come from being an active participant in the global community. The challenge in establishing telecommunication systems in developing and rural areas is finding a way to make permanent models that will perpetually generate revenue, create impact, and grow. At Alexius, we move beyond simply providing our clients with internet access by supporting them in leveraging that access to improve their lives.
Historically, funds to build telecommunication infrastructure in rural communities came from taxes acquired in larger towns and cities where the infrastructure was already in place. While this system could aid in getting telecommunication systems into rural areas, the lack of organization and possibility of corruption have made it a slow-moving process. In the meantime, many communities have decided to move forward, considering other methods to link to internet or telephone networks, such as cable, satellite, WiFi, WiMax, and Mesh connections. According to a study Alexius performed, the best systems for communities without preexisting infrastructure are WiFi or WiMax, depending on the proposed number of users and the budget of the organization. Like the work Alexius does in other sectors, the solutions we develop are customized to the area’s needs, budget, and existing conditions.
Alexius has developed telecommunication systems in the following projects:
- ADA & ICT Sector Positioning
- This project helped strengthen the Armenian Development Agency through positioning the technology sector as a key catalyst in Armenia's economic growth and improving institutional functions.
- Last Mile Initiative
- Overview of LMI.
- LMI Colombia
- Alexius helped expand telecommunications access into rural Colombia, which helps institutionalize democracy and involve people in the nation's economy.
- LMI Ecuador
- Alexius partnered with USAID to deploy a high speed Internet connectivity through the Credit Union network in order to service rural communities.
- LMI Guatemala
- In this project, Alexius created the Oportunet brand, under which micro-telcos operate. Through this, rural communities gained access to telecommunications, which then delivered new social and economic opportunities to those communities.
- LMI Paraguay
- LMI-Paraguay provided internet access to 100 organizations throughout Paraguay, before the private sector brought internet access to them, in order to help them learn how to maximize the community benefits of internet access.
- LMI Peru
- Alexius and partners deployed one of the first micro-telcos in Peru, giving various organizations internet access. After seeing the vast development potential, the Peruvian government allocated more funds to create more micro-telcos in rural areas.
- Micro-Telco in a Box
- An integrated kit composed of basic telecommunication hardware and a set of Open Source applications and platforms.
- Open Source Migration
- Alexius worked with the Ministry of Labor in Guatemala to implement a sustainable solution to its information systems platforms, implementing Open Source software with extensive training sessions. Through this, the Ministry has a sustainable cost structure and licensed software, allowing it to better serve Guatemala.
